Meredith-Springfield Associates Inc., an extrusion and stretch blow molder in Ludlow, Mass., helped Mrs. Dash PET spice bottles thin down.

The company built pilot molds and conducted design experiments to reduce the material used in Mrs. Dash packaging. By adjusting the weight bearing performance of the package, Meredith-Springfield was able to reduce bottle weight by more than 24 percent — saving B&G Foods Inc. more than 200,000 pounds of PET resin a year.

“In reducing the weight, we carefully engineered the placement of the remaining mass of plastic to go into the areas of the bottle which would maximize top-loading ability,” said Mel O’Leary, president and CEO of Meredith-Springfield.

A new extrusion blow molding machine produces more than 100,000 Mrs. Dash bottles in a 24-hour period — more than 35 million a year.
